The Besnard Lakes

Now here's a band that could give Arcade Fire a run fot their money. I first posted on The Besnard Lakes, back here, after reading about them. They sounded very intriguing to me and Stylus have agreed with that assessment

"Beach Boys harmonies (yes, really), well-toned psychedelic guitar solos, closets full of noise and haze, and an attentive palate for the gaffes and perfect imperfections of the first-takes, basically everything that makes the indie cognoscenti salivate right now—and molded it into something softly fierce and primal. In fact, at times, its lyrical themes—all gasoline-burnt and obscure—are difficult to imagine perched atop such glowing harmonies, but the Besnard Lakes somehow turn that dichotomy to their advantage, forging intangible epics out of splinter-wired amps and codas of excess".

The mp3,below, is absolutely tremendous and I detect a little Syd Barrett influence in the glorious chorus.

I've tried to listen to this twice and I just don't get it. Everybody seems to love this release. For me this release could be the Joanne Newsom's "y's" of last year which everyone and their butler raved about and I couldn't hardly get past the first song.

Micky67, would you consider this release a grower or did you instantly go "wow" when you first heard it? I will say the vocals remind me of Low at times and the music has a 70's classic rock throwback quality similiar to Black Mountain's last album. But that aside, I don't know.....

I think I would consider this along the same lines as Grizzly Bear, there's a definite psychedelic influence and a bit of the more experimental Beach Boys sound.

I never listened to Joanna Newsom last year because I was totally put off by the hype you mention. So I can understand where you are coming from. Although I didn't realise there was so much hype surrounding The Besnard Lakes. I was intrigued after learning they featured members of the Godspeed collective
